Govt ran engineering college without AICTE’s nod

Here's a classic case of the fence eating the crop. The Karnataka government, which cracks down on illegal institutes, has itself jeopardised the future of engineering students by illegally running an engineering college for a year.

The three-decade-old Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC) in Rajajinagar, run by the small-scale industries department, is in a spot for admitting students to two BTech programmes in tool engineering and precision technology during 2010-11 without the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education, the apex engineering education regulator. Now, the fate of 41 students hangs in the balance as GTTC wants the students transferred to some other engineering college. No fresh admissions are being made in 2011-12.

Documents with TOI show that the state government allowed GTTC to start engineering programmes in cutting-edge areas with an intake of 60 seats in July 2010. The Karnataka Examinations Authority, too, allotted seats to 42 students. Finding serious deficiencies in infrastructure and qualified faculty, AICTE refused to grant permission.
