GSAT-12 takes off today

The country’s tele-medicine and tele-education sectors are expected to get a major boost with the launch of GSAT-12, a multipurpose satellite built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), on Friday.
An advanced version of polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) — rated as the country’s trusted workhorse — will put the satellite weighing 1,410kg in a pre-determined orbit after a flight of 20 minutes.
The mission titled PSLV-C17 will lift off from India’s gateway, the Satish Dhavan Space Centre at Sriharikotta, 80km north of Chennai at 4.48 pm on Friday.
Usually communication satellites are launched with the heavy Geo Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicles (GSLV). Since ISRO scientists are yet to develop an indigenous cryogenic engine to power the GSLV even after 25 years of research, the PSLV has been selected to launch the communication satellite this time.
