Kamini Patnaik passes away

A pioneer in privatisation of technical education in Odisha, Kamini Kanta Patnaik, passed away on Monday morning at the Apollo Hospital here. He was 90. Patnaik's daughter, son-in-law, grand children and many eminent personalities were present at his bedside at the time of demise.

Patnaik was born on March 1, 1921 at Morada in the erstwhile feudatory state of Mayurbhanj. 
He was a law graduate and was an expert in Income Tax, Sales Tax and Company Law. He practised in the Odisha High Court and Supreme Court. 

Till the end he was a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Patnaik was director of the erstwhile Kalinga Airlines, director in the Kalinga Industries, director of the Kalinga Tubes and also director of the B Patnaik Mines.  He was also director and shareholder of the Utkal Dairy. 

Patnaik acted as legal advisor to many multinational companies at that time. Associated with various social service organizations, Patnaik was vice- president of the Odisha Olympic Association, vice-president of the Odisha Football Association and president of the Odisha State Cycling Association. 

He was also general secretary of Mayurbhanj Athletic Association for 28 years.
As chairman of the Nabajyoti Charitable Trust, Patnaik started the first ever private engineering college in north-eastern India under the 'Orissa Engineering College' and then established a management college, 'Centre for Management Studies'.

At the time of demise Patnaik was also the Managing Trustee of the Kalinga Foundation Trust, which awards the prestigious and internationally famous 'Kalinga Prize', now named as UNESCO Kalinga Prize.

He was president of the Kalinga Institute of Technology and Design devoted to research work for industries in Odisha.
