Orissa-based CIFA organizes National Workshop On 'Portable FRP Carp Hatchery Technology'

The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with All India Coordinated Research Project on Application of Plastics in Agriculture organizes National Workshop on “portable FRP carp hatchery technology” during 11-13 July, 2011.

The institute has developed a fiber reinforced plastic hatchery, as an alternative to concrete hatchery, for production of healthy carp seed. The hatchery system consisting of one breeding pool; one hatching pool; and egg collection chamber and an over head storage tank, can produce 10 lakh carp spawn per operation. The technology was commercialized in 2006 and is available at a price of Rs. 1.0 lakh approximately.

This hatchery is easy to install, operate and it has an added advantage that the unit can be carried to different location as per the requirement of the farmer. This technology is of immense help in producing quality fish seed and ensuring availability of adequate quantity fish seeds to small and marginal farmers all over the country. Till date 126 units have been established in 25 states and the performance of this technology is reported to be encouraging.

The three day workshop is being organized with the objective of –

i. Familiarizing the participants’ with the FRP hatchery and its operations ,
ii. Sharing experiences with users, and
iii. Framing strategy for up gradation and wider disseminations
