Orissa to frame guidelines for setting up private varsities


Bhubaneswar, Nov 3 (PTI) With many making a beeline to set up private universities in the state, Orissa government today said it would formulate specific guidelines for the purpose. "It is decided to have specific guidelines for setting up private varsities in the state. Presently, there is no such policy," chief secretary B K Patnaik said after a meeting. Besides existing educational institutions, others have also have shown interest to set up universities. "However, we will follow the norms and principles of the University Grant Commission (UGC) while allowing private parties to set up varsities here," he said. More than two dozen parties are interested to set up private universities in the state, said higher education secretary Chandrasekhar Kumar said adding there were 11 government universities including two technical universities and a central university in the state. "Now we have the policy of encouraging good institutes to set up private universities. However, private universities will be allowed to go ahead after verifying their credentials, academic programme, infrastructure facilities," he said. While earlier there were only three universities like Utkal University, Berhampur University and Sambalpur University in the state, the state government set up Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology followed by Biju Patnaik University of Technology. This apart, a university each has been set up in the name of Fakir Mohan University, North Orissa University, Utkal University of Culture and Ravenshaw University. The state also had private deemed to be universities like KIIT University and Sikshya O Anusandhan University. The state assembly had meanwhile passed bills for setting up Sri Sri University, ICFI and Centurion University. A National Law University and a campus of the Indira Gandhi Open University also functions in the state. PTI AAM SKN NIK
