The inter-governmental consultations, termed by Merkel as a “milestone in Indo-German relations”, will include discussions on the full range of bilateral relations, from security and defence policy, trade, vocational training, education and research to infrastructure and sustainable energy and environment technologies.
It will also address current regional, global and international issues, such as bilateral cooperation in and reform of the United Nations Security Council, fight against terrorism, Afghanistan, the situation in North Africa and the Middle Markel’s visit will also mark the 60th anniversary of the "successful diplomatic relations" between both countries. In addition, she will attend the opening of the 'Year of Germany in India' with a concert in New Delhi.
Merkel will also be honoured with the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding during her visit.
Referring to the award, Merkel said: “I accept this award not only as an honour to the Chancellor, but especially as a tribute to the achievements of my fellow citizens in fulfilling the values of friendship and international understanding that the award recognizes.”
She emphasized that the award would strengthen the bonds of friendship between Germany and India and would bring the people of the two countries even closer together.
Merkel will be accompanied by four cabinet ministers, five members of the German Parliament and representatives of German business, education and research organisations.
